Back to Life Back to reality

So school has started officially this week. It's going well so far. My classes seem awesome. I have felt a little stiff with my work though. I saw that some of my friends we're doing grey scale sketches in photoshop for their class with my life drawing teacher from last semester, Tony Shore. I decided to try and do him proud and attempt to capture my likeness in 2 hours. I don't think It's quite up to the standards he held me by, however, it's the right direction I think.

I second that.

You're at a good point with this peice, you captured the likeness so don't stop there, keep going. My philosophy is to keep working on something into it's at an appropriate point.

I dunno, guys, I think the soft-edged thing is only a problem on the left cheek (ours, not brandon's) and the left side of the background framing the face. Doesn't seem to do too much harm elsewhere.

Also, totally agree with Zach. The main disagreement with soft edged brushes is that they don't allow much control as to how "focused" looking that one part of the painting is, so it tends to stand out way too much. It's generally good form to have the strokes on the subject (the bust) be hard-edged and a bit more finished looking...people tend to use soft brushes for starting a digital underpainting.
